Our children’s health is a concern for the whole community. That’s why we are joining YMCAs across the country to celebrate YMCA Healthy Kids Day, a national event celebrating healthy living and helping kids and families embrace healthy habits they can sustain for a lifetime. More than sixteen hundred communities participated in YMCA Healthy Kids Day in 2007. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a signature event of the YMCA Activate America initiative which is rallying YMCAs across the country to further help individuals and families who struggle to adopt and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Collectively, the nation’s 2,663 YMCAs are the largest provider of child care, afterschool and youth sports programs. YMCA child care strives to help children grow physically, mentally and spiritually, and includes character development, international education, health and wellness, environmental awareness, school readiness, diversity and community service. With YMCAs located in thousands of communities and neighborhoods, Ys offer a broad range of programs, including youth leadership and volunteerism. Ys are working to incorporate physical activity into all aspects of youth, family and community programming.
YMCAs serve more than 20.2 million people each year of all faiths, races, ages and incomes, including 10 million under the age of 18. From urban areas to small towns, YMCAs are the heart of community life in the United States.
